Aluminum composite panels (ACP), a sandwich material that bonds thin aluminum skins to a non-metallic core, have become a standard option for building facades, advertising signage and industrial design. The construction combines low weight with high structural rigidity, allowing panels to be transported and installed with comparatively little effort. Core formulations have been progressively refined to address fire-safety requirements and long-term weather exposure.
The material's performance derives from its multilayer structure. Two thin aluminum sheets are bonded under a co-extrusion process to a thermoplastic or mineral-filled core, producing a panel that retains the weather resistance of metal while gaining acoustic and thermal insulation from the core layer.
That combination underpins the main technical characteristics cited by specifiers:
Panel thickness and aluminum skin thickness must be matched to the intended application to balance cost against service life. Interior work generally tolerates thinner skins, while curtain wall systems require substantially heavier aluminum facings.
| Application | Aluminum skin thickness | Total panel thickness |
|---|---|---|
| Interior decoration | ≥ 0.1mm | Approximately 3mm |
| Exterior cladding and signage | ≥ 0.2mm | ≥ 4mm |
| Building curtain walls | ≥ 0.5mm | Greater than 4mm |
Beyond facades and exterior cladding, aluminum composite panels are used in the transport sector. Their low weight has led to adoption in the interior structures of trains, buses and aircraft, where reduced mass contributes to lower fuel and energy consumption. The flat, smooth surface of the panels also makes them a common substrate for high-end commercial signage.
Installation practice is a further determinant of performance. Panels must be connected to the supporting frame system in line with design specifications to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction, and processing tools should be selected according to aluminum skin thickness so that surface coatings are not damaged during cutting or bending.
